The profile of the Masters chair was derived from combining the silhouettes of three iconic designs; Arne Jacobsen’s Series 7, Eero Saarinen’s Tulip chair and Charles Eames’ Eiffel Chair. Starck claimed these, ‘historical lines overlie each other and intersect to finally yield an organic design closest to our body today’. Three classic organic inspired designs have then been reimagined in the digital age to optimise ergonomic support. A roomy comfortable chair was the aim. The resultant hybrid has been a huge success for the manufacturer and earned the designers a number of awards, including the Red Dot award. As with the Mr. Impossible chair Starck worked with Eugeni Quitllet to develop this design for Kartell. The Masters Chair is made from dyed, modified polypropylene, which makes it ‘feel sensual and velvety to the touch,’ according to the manufacturer and weights just over 4kg. It is stackable and suitable for outdoor use. Two stools were latter added to the range.
