Louis Durot’s (1939- ) training as a chemical engineer has enabled him to develop the expertise needed to create his own sculptures in polyurethane. Designed in 1968, L’Aspirale was among the first body of work to emerge from his newly formed studio. Durot’s creations are arguably closer to artworks than industrial design, with great attention given to the lacquered finish. A self-supporting, three-dimensional sculptural spiral that can be used as a chair. L’Aspirale was introduced in 1970 and is still available from the designer. Hand crafted copyists have struggled to find industrial solutions to reproduce the chair – often copies feature a central column to provide strength, while completely distracting from the elegance of the original design.
