Note: Country of origin: Italy. Image: Wright auctions. The Gaudi evolved from Vico Magistretti’s earlier design, the Selene (note the similarity in the legs). As with the earlier chair the Gaudi is made from compression moulded, fibreglass reinforced polyester and was manufactured by Artemide. Armrests have been added to this design to enhance comfort, which presented a challenge for the chair to still be manufactured in one piece. Gaudi was launched in 1970 and remained in production for only three years. In 1971, the Vicario chair was added to the collection, it is a wider and slightly shorter version of the Gaudi at 72cm wide, 68cm tall and 65cm deep (12cm wider and 5cm shorter than the Gaudi). Heller (who also reintroduced the Selene) reintroduced the Gaudi in 2007 (using a lighter, more advanced injection moulded polymer available in white, black, light grey and dark grey).
