Note: Country of origin: Germany. Image: Rago Auctions. The Floris chair gained much attention upon its launch at the Cologne furniture fair in 1968, thanks to its unique design. Featuring only three legs, the idea was to provide ergonomic support for the rear, back and neck and encourage freedom of movement. Its sleek, sinuous appearance meant the design immediately stood out from the other chairs at the fair. Made from fibreglass reinforced polyester and lacquered the Floris is light and stackable. The seat was designed to encourage rainwater runoff as it was anticipated the chair could be used outdoors as well as inside. The double shell design proved difficult to produce and only a very small number (probably 50) were produced as the first edition, the financial rewards falling well short of expectations set by the enthusiastic reception at the Cologne fair. A table and stool were also produced to go with the chairs and originals remain rare. In 1991, Galerie Wolfgang Maurer issued a further edition of 100 copies of the high back chair and some tables.
