Image: Emeco. ERPR score = 12 (above average). Philippe Starck was among the first designers to take on the challenge of exploiting the inherent aesthetic properties of recycled plastics for a chair. The Broom chair was named as the designer wanted to conjure up an image of factory waste being sept up ready to be thrown away. Instead that waste has been recycled and made into a chair. Manufactured in America by Emeco (Electric Machine and Equipment Company) from 75% waste polypropylene and 15% reclaimed wood fiber, the end product monobloc, which took two years to develop, can itself be recycled – further improving the environmental credentials of this chair. The Broom is available in a choice of six colours and can be stacked up to six units high.
