The chair was enormously successful commercially and led to many more translucent designs being developed by Starck for Kartell. La Marie is also noteworthy for its geometric form, which contrasts with the organic curves popular with designers working with plastics in the decades preceding this design. Weighing just 3.5kg La Marie is a triumph of dematerialisation, setting a new standard in minimising the material and energy needed to make a chair.
